KINGSTON — Four municipalities along the VIA Rail corridor through eastern Ontario — including Kingston — launched an online survey this week to gauge interest in passenger rails service.

The survey, a follow up to a council motion passed earlier this month, is meant to collect data the city can then use to bolster its case for expanding Via Rail service.

“Passenger rail is one of the key transportation options that keep Kingston and all eastern Ontario communities connected,” Mayor Bryan Paterson said in a news release. “Through this survey, we are asking residents if there is community interest in new rail service options, including a late-night train possibility.”

Belleville, Cobourg and Port Hope are joining Kingston in conducting the survey.
