POOLER, Ga. (WSAV) — A raccoon has tested positive for rabies in Pooler, the Chatham County Health Department (DPH) said.
On Oct. 21, a family dog was attacked in a residential area in Pooler near the I-16 and I-95 interchange. Following the incident, animal services picked up the raccoon, which tested positive for rabies.
The dog was up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations and received a booster after the incident. No humans were exposed to the raccoon.
Chatham DPH is reminding residents to follow these safety measures: • Avoid contact with animals you don't know. • Give your pets proper immunization. • Avoid handling or attracting animals with food, and do not try to adopt wild animals. • Teach children to never handle unfamiliar animals.
