NEW KENT , Va. (WWBT) - Amtrak service between Richmond and Newport News has been suspended through Saturday, Nov. 1, following a CSX coal train derailment in New Kent County on Saturday, Oct. 25, that left tracks destroyed and inoperable.
Two locomotives and 53 coal cars derailed on the tracks between Roxbury Road and South Mountcastle Road.
CSX crews are working around the clock to clean up the extensive damage, which includes coal scattered across the area and severely damaged tracks.
CSX released a statement regarding the incident, noting that the locomotives carried an “unknown quantity of diesel fuel.”
“Containment measures were immediately deployed, and we will work to recover the lost diesel fuel,” the company said.
