LAS VEGAS, N.M. —
Work is ongoing to determine what will happen after an unmarked gravesite was found to have human remains near the New Mexico Behavioral Health Institute.
A spokesperson with the state General Services Department said a contractor uncovered the remains in an outer portion of a construction project area. Work was stopped after the discovery was made on Monday, Oct. 27.
GSD is working with the Department of Cultural Affairs, the state Historic Preservation office, along with an onsite and state archeologist to see what next steps to take.
The group will decide on either rerouting some of the work around the gravesite or relocating the remains to a new burial site. The spokesperson also said steps are being done to preserve the remains.
