FAIRFIELD COUNTY, S.C. — Leaders and residents are weighing in on a plan to restart the VC Summer nuclear reactor project.
Santee Cooper has signed a letter of intent with privately owned Brookfield Asset Management to build the two reactors. This comes eight years after the project was abandoned, leaving thousands without jobs.
“It was just a punch in the gut to the citizens around here. It was ‘here we go again.’ For a little while, it seemed like it was nothing but bad news,” said Dillon Pullen, president of the Fairfield County Chamber of Commerce.
In 2017, the plan to build two new reactors at the VC Summer Nuclear Plant in Fairfield County was abandoned mid-construction after mismanagement and cost overruns, resulting in nearly 5,000 lost jobs.
