Freestyle Fellowship rapper P.E.A.C.E. has died. West Coast hip-hop is mourning the loss of one of its foundational voices in the iconic MC of Los Angeles group Freestyle Fellowship. The Grammy-nominated group confirmed via their Instagram page that Mtulazaji Davis, better known as P.E.A.C.E., had passed away. No cause of death has been released. "Rest well brother P.E.A.C.E," the group wrote. "You had a great heart and you were authentic. One of West Coast hip-hop's royal treasures. You will be surely missed, my friend." P.E.A.C.E. was born in Dallas but raised in Los Angeles. He met Myka 9, Aceyalone and Self Jupiter at the Good Life Café there, and together they formed the pioneering alternative rap group in the late 1980s. The group broke through to the mainstream with their 1991 debut, To Whom It May Concern... They followed up with Innercity Griots in 1993. Delayed due to Self Jupiter being in prison, the group then released Temptations in 2001. They returned nearly a decade later with The Promise in 2011, which was Freestyle Fellowship's final release. Tributes from across the hip-hop community poured in. Blu, a frequent collaborator with Myka 9, wrote on Instagram, "P.E.A.C.E. is the illest emcee from the most infamous Freestyle Fellowship. There will never be another. Peace P.E.A.C.E., rest in power & paradise."
