Former Hibs manager Shaun Maloney has joined Martin O’Neill at Celtic on an interim basis, taking charge of first team matters following the shock resignation of Brendan Rodgers tonight.

The highly rated coach joined Hibs in December 2021 replacing Jack Ross. After a bright start a run of one win in 13 league games meant that the team dropped into the bottom half of the table.

Defeat to Hearts in the Scottish Cup semi-final ended his tenure.

A club statement reveals Rodgers offered his resignation, which was accepted with immediate effect.

Rodgers was in his second spell as Celtic boss, winning successive league titles after his return in 2023. He also guided the club to Scottish Premiership titles in 2017 and 2018.

But he leaves with Celtic eight points behind Hearts in the tab;e.
