The federal government shutdown is causing a Raleigh-based social services group to temporarily lay off hundreds of workers, including more than 250 in North Carolina.

The East Coast Migrant Head Start Project, which provides early education and nutrition services for migrant workers and their children, says it will temporarily lay off 258 employees at offices across North Carolina. Most of the jobs are in central or eastern North Carolina. Most of the group’s employees are expected to be placed on unpaid furlough starting Nov. 1.
