RALEIGH, N.C. — The State Board of Education voted Monday to hire a firm to perform an internal controls review of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, a move aimed at helping the district strengthen its financial oversight after a major budget crisis .
Officials emphasized that the review is not the same as an audit. Instead, it will evaluate whether the district’s new and existing financial safeguards are effective and sustainable — and whether it has the planning and tools needed to prevent similar financial issues in the future.
The review will cost the district $97,770. State Board Chair Eric Davis said it’s a worthwhile investment in restoring confidence and improving fiscal management.
