COLUMBUS, Ohio — People arriving at the Breathing Association building on Broad Street were greeted Monday with a closed sign and locked doors. The nonprofit that offers medical care and energy assistance had to furlough staff Friday as the federal shutdown has stopped the flow of money it relies on.
At the beginning of the government shutdown Oct. 1, Dr. Iyadd Hasan, the Breathing Association’s president and CEO, was optimistic the 120-year-old organization would make it through the shutdown unscathed. That attitude has changed as the shutdown nears one month and the money that kept the doors open has stopped completely.
“Sadly, the funding that we did have when we were talking, when I was very optimistic, my optimism... sadly went away very fast,” said Dr. Hasan.
