WILLIAMSPORT — Removal of material stored in tanks has started at the closed Williamsport facility that processed wastewater from natural gas fracking operations, and from which an oily substance leaked in August.
Eureka Resources began the process Monday, missing a state Department of Environmental Protection deadline to have the work completed by several weeks.
An Aug. 19 order required Eureka to remove within 30 daysall waste from that location, a second in Williamsport and one in Bradford County.
The violation for not complying with the order remains outstanding, DEP says.
Only wastewater is being removed from the Second Street location. It is being trucked to Kleese Disposal in Ohio, a permitted disposal site, a DEP spokesperson said. No waste oil has been removed, she said.
