ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - On Monday, MARTA officials unveiled new faregates that will soon be installed at all MARTA train stations and on board all buses.
“We have to meet people where they are, and where they are and where society is, is frictionless payment and beyond, so we have to step up,” said MARTA interim CEO Jonathan Hunt in an interview Monday with Atlanta News First.
MARTA is testing the new faregates at the Lindbergh and Doraville stations; however, they will not go into service until April.
MARTA hopes the new technology will address fare evasion, an issue MARTA has struggled with for years.
In 2017, during a six-week crackdown, MARTA reported 538 people used the system without paying.
