DES MOINES COUNTY, Iowa (KCRG) - The Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship says someone in Des Moines County found an adult spotted lanternfly in an industrial area in September .

The spotted lanternfly is native to China and Vietnam and was found in the United States in 2014 in Pennsylvania .

It is a dotted insect with a distinctive bright red patch under its wings.

According to Tivon Feeley, forest health program leader with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the insect has spread west from Pennsylvania.

“It’s moved to 20, 21 states about now,” said Feeley.

He explained there was also detection in 2022 in Dallas County, Iowa, but they didn’t find signs of breeding there.
