A man and woman have been killed in an underground mine explosion in western NSW on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to the mine on Endeavor Road, Cobar, about 700 kilometres north-west of Sydney, about 3.45am after reports two people had been critically injured in the explosion.

Police officers were told one man had been confirmed dead when they arrived at the scene, while a woman died after being brought back to the surface.

They are yet to be formally identified, though police believe the man is aged in his sixties, the woman in her twenties, and both lived in Cobar.

She was raised to the surface with another woman, aged in her twenties and also from Cobar, who was airlifted to hospital to be treated for hearing damage and shock.
