TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Food banks across southern Idaho are preparing for increased demand after federal food assistance benefits were suspended due to the government shutdown.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced that benefits for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will not go out due to the government shutdown.
The Trump administration said it would not tap roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to support the program.
“Food is one of the basic needs for humans to live, and the need for increased assistance for food is going to show a high demand on the community as well as each individual,” said Rosanna Campbell, Community Service Director with the South Central Community Action Partnership.
