LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Former Lauderdale County Judge Gil Self is on trial after a week-long jury selection that began on October 20.

On Monday, opening statements began with the state of Alabama going first, stating that the jury will see evidence that Self used court funds for personal gain, and that there were receipts and documentation that prove it.

The defense, then, told the jury that they would see evidence that Self was not trained properly on how to manage court funds he supervised, and he had no guidance from the state on how to handle accounts.

After opening statements, the state called its first witness, Rachel Riddle, chief examiner for the state of Alabama. Riddle said her job is to look over public accounts. Riddle testified that during several audits, auditors
