MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — Three historic buildings at Central State Hospital are getting a second chance at life after facing possible demolition under a 2023 executive order from Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp.

A Perry-based company, Ambryo Design, is investing $40 million to redevelop the Green, Walker and Jones buildings into a mix of housing, retail and event space.

College student Rosemary Lillevik said she’s felt the housing squeeze for years and sees the project as a needed boost.

“More housing in this area is a good thing,” Lillevik said. “It’s been a major issue finding housing, even if you aren’t just a student. They keep bringing in larger freshman classes, so it’s also a struggle for upperclassmen trying to find housing.”
