Before the opening kick between No. 2 South Fayette and No. 3 Moon in Monday’s WPIAL Class 3A girls soccer semifinals at Dormont Memorial Stadium, there was a peculiar sight on the Lions’ half of the field.

The national anthem was winding down to its final lines, and standing in a single file line pointing toward the flag, the South Fayette players began to hop. Up and down, they bounced with more energy and enthusiasm with each ensuing jump.

South Fayette coach Nick Rosser isn’t quite sure how this tradition first began. He just knows it’s been passed down “for years.”

“I feel like it’s kind of our start into the game,” senior Mia Deramo explained. “You know, going from slow into ‘Alright, let’s go.’”
