PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — The government shutdown has come with some major interruptions, and perhaps one of the biggest could come in the form of SNAP benefits possibly being halted by the end of the week.

The uncertainty has Hampton Roads residents trying to shop smart and stretch their dollars as far as they can.

"Get what you can," said Virginia Beach resident Laurie Mullen Parker. "Every dollar counts."

That's what shoppers told us after learning SNAP benefits, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, will run out soon.
