ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Kenneth Henderson, who already has been suspended from his position as sheriff of north Georgia’s Towns County, has been indicted on seven charges related to his December 2024 physical confrontation with a local police officer.

Henderson’s suspension and indictment comes as a direct result of an Atlanta News First investigation that first reported the confrontation between the sheriff and Hiawassee, Georgia, Police Officer José Carvajal, a confrontation that led to Carvajal’s arrest and all of which was captured on body camera.

Early Monday evening, a Towns County grand jury charged Henderson with:

Violation of an oath by public officer.

False imprisonment under color of law.

Violation of oath by public officer.

False imprisonment.
