RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. —

A Southern California deputy was killed in the line of duty on Monday while responding to the report of an armed man who was making threats, according to the San Bernardino Sheriff's Office.

Around 12:37 p.m., deputies responded to a residence on Hollyhock Drive in Rancho Cucamonga. When deputies arrived, officials said they were immediately fired upon by the suspect.

The sheriff's office said one of its deputies, 28-year-old Andrew Nunez, was struck by the gunfire. He was airlifted to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect then led deputies on a vehicle pursuit, getting onto eastbound Interstate 210, officials said. The suspect reached speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.
