NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The trial for a civil lawsuit between Newport News Public Schools and former Richneck Elementary School teacher Abby Zwerner began on Monday with the seating of a jury.
The $40 million lawsuit stems from the shooting that took place on Jan. 6, 2023 , when a 6-year-old student shot Zwerner in her classroom.
On Tuesday, the trial begins with attorneys making their opening statements.
Both sides took their time today to seat a jury for the two-week long case, saying they don't want any mistakes or mistrials.
Attorneys say the $40 million lawsuit is historic.
If Newport News Public Schools is found liable for Zwerner’s injuries, it would mark the first time in history a school division was found partially responsible for a school shooting.
