Two state lawmakers and the Alabama secretary of state will push a bill in 2026 amending the state constitution to require anyone running for certain public offices to be natural-born U.S. citizens.
The bill, announced on Monday by Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, would restrict candidacy for those offices from roughly 80,000 Alabamians who are naturalized U.S. citizens, according to data by the Migration Policy Institute.
