BISMARCK, ND (KXNET) — The North Dakota Game and Fish Department is continuing its Hunter-Harvested Surveillance program during this year's hunting season.

Game and Fish is testing for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), which is a fatal disease that impacts deer and elk. In 2024, Game and Fish tested 1,456 animals for CWD; 17 deer tested positive.

Game and Fish will be testing samples collected from deer taken from units 3A1, 3A2, 3A3, 3B1, 3B2, 4A, 4B, and 4C. Hunters can test samples from other areas by using a self-sampling kit, or they can bring samples from other units to a Game and Fish district office or deer head collection site. Deer or fawns that are shot in the head cannot be tested.
