ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - A man killed during a Saturday incident with Cherokee County deputies was armed with a knife and attacked one of the lawmen before he was shot, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

The GBI said Andre Alvear, 26, was shot and killed after two Cherokee County deputies tried to do a welfare check at a home on Whisperwood Trail in Acworth Saturday night.

“Alvear briefly spoke with the deputies and then shut the door to the home. Alvear then opened the door and lunged at one of the deputies with a knife, hitting the deputy in the face. Alvear chased the deputy with the knife as the deputy retreated,” the GBI said.

The GBI said both deputies then shot Alvear.
