The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office is alerting members of the public about a scam that is happening throughout Corpus Christi that could affect residents.
The office has received an influx of calls from community members who say that someone impersonating a staff member of the sheriff’s office has contacted them and accused them of missing federal jury duty, according to an email notice from Natalie Williams, a spokesperson for the Nueces County Sheriff's Office.
The fraudulent contacts claim to have a signed, certified mail receipt and threaten people that if they don’t pay, they will be arrested, she wrote.
Most of the people calling the sheriff’s office to warn them about the scam are older adults, who are less likely to have social media or who are unaware of such scams.
