TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Recent rain have led to an unusual increase in mosquito activity across southern Arizona. Despite a fairly dry monsoon, recent storms have brought the pesky insects back in full force.

Christopher Sands with Mosquito Squad, a local pest control company, said their phone lines have been busier than usual.

“We’ve been seeing a huge increase in activity, a lot of calls coming in with new customers and everything,” Sands said.

The increase is tied to late monsoon rainstorms that have created ideal breeding conditions for one of the largest mosquito species in southern Arizona.

Michael Riehle, an entomology professor at the University of Arizona, said this type of mosquito lays eggs in standing water that can remain dormant for extended periods.
