COLUMBUS, Ohio (WJW) -- The FOX 8 I-Team is tracking new developments in a push to uncover conditions in so-called puppy mills in Ohio.

On Tuesday, first testimony was heard for a new state law proposed by Sen. Casey Weinstein, a Democrat from Hudson. The proposed law would "clarify the definition and strengthen regulatory oversight of high-volume dog breeders, often referred to as 'puppy mills,'" Weinstein said.

"Animals deserve to be treated with care and respect, and communities shouldn’t have to deal with the consequences of neglect and abuse," the senator added. "This bill ensures accountability, protects dogs from mistreatment, and closes loopholes that let irresponsible breeders operate without oversight.”
