NEW YORK (PIX11) – A meeting on Wednesday night could determine if New York City Public Schools’ private bus companies will move forward with their threat to lay off their drivers, leaving roughly 150,000 students stranded.

The Panel for Education Policy, made up of community members, teachers and parents, is considering a resolution to deny a five-year contract extension sought by the bus companies due to the contract failing to include certain employee protections.

The bus companies argue that the contract extension has already been negotiated with the Department of Education and the mayor’s office. An emergency contract put into place on July 1 will expire on Oct. 31.
