Iwona Giza spoke about the ‘demoralising’ abuse she suffered in an effort to encourage other victims of domestic abuse to speak out.

The 28-year-old, a qualified doctor, described the ‘traumatic, psychologically damaging and long lasting’ abuse she suffered at the hands of a ‘very violent and emotionally abusive man’.

Her former partner, Barry Maguire, was recently sentenced to five years at Dungannon Crown Court for domestic abuse offences, including five counts of non-fatal strangulation.

Maguire (41), from Omagh, received a five year sentence for each of the offences, all to be served concurrently.

Half will be spent in custody and the remaining time on licence.
