KENT, Ohio — There is a line on the runway at Kent State University Airport that is a mark of pride for collegiate pilots. The closer your plane's tires land to that line, the more points you earn for your team. It's all part of the weeklong Safety and Flight Evaluation Conference, or SAFECON , regional competition.
Think of it as "March Madness" for aviation.
"Yeah, it's a little grueling, but it's awesome every bit of the way,” LeAnne Hank of Kent State’s Flight Team told 3News. “It's just something new. It's awesome."
The competition includes both flight and ground events. Hawk is an air traffic control major who prefers to stay grounded. Her specialty? Aircraft recognition.
