OMAHA, Neb. —

It's day 29 of the government shutdown, and SNAP benefits have been paused for Nebraskans, starting Wednesday.

Omaha Mayor John Ewing Jr. announced a city-run food drive to help put food on the table for Omaha families in need, and local businesses are also getting involved to help neighbors in need.

Noli's Pizzeria is offering free meals to those affected by the pause in SNAP benefits. It's a business that is also affected by the streetcar construction. Owner, Joel Marsh, said they're struggling in their own ways because of that, but he was inspired by stories he's heard from friends about food insecurity in the metro and knew he wanted to help.

"I was just talking with a lady on Facebook who has two families, 16 total. So they're making that right now," Marsh said.
