SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (KFVS) - Illinois Governor JB Pritzker signed an executive order to direct $20 million toward food banks in response to the disruption of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funding benefits on Saturday, November 1.
The Department of Agriculture has posted on its website that the SNAP benefits will end on Friday because of the ongoing government shutdown.
According to Gov. Pritzker’s office, nearly 2 million Illinoisans rely on SNAP benefits.
The executive order directs the following statewide response:
Emergency Funding to Food Banks : Illinois will direct $20 million in state funding to support food banks across Illinois beginning November 1, as food banks and pantries across the state will likely face increased demand due to the pause of SNAP funds.
