BOSTON —

Funding for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program , the federal food support formerly known as Food Stamps, is set to lapse on Nov. 1, affecting more than 1 million residents across Massachusetts.

Democratic lawmakers have called on the administration to use roughly $5 billion in contingency funds to keep food aid flowing into November, but the idea was rejected by the Department of Agriculture and the Trump administration, which argued it does not have the power to use the fund to cover the SNAP program.

Massachusetts is among the states suing in an attempt to force the government to use the emergency funds to restore at least partial benefits.
