Authorities are investigating after two large barges ran ashore on Woodmont Beach in Milford on Thursday.

It comes amid strong winds and rough seas as Hurricane Melissa passes several hundred miles away .

The U.S. Coast Guard was made aware of the incident, and they're coming up with a plan to salvage them.

People in the area are being advised not to approach the barges.

The Milford Fire Department said strong winds and rough seas are expected to continue through the night, and high tide happens around 6:30 p.m.

Coast Guard officials said they're unsure how the barges got there, whether they came loose or if they were already in operation.
