SNAP benefits are set to expire on Nov. 1 with the ongoing government shutdown. State lawmakers and community members are preparing for the impact that loss can have for hundreds of thousands in our state.

As uncertainty grows over the future of SNAP benefits, one lawmaker is putting himself in the shoes of recipients.

For the past few days, State Senator Saud Anwar (D-South Windsor) has lived on $6.20 a day for food, which is the average daily amount provided to SNAP recipients.

“I’m trying to shine the light on the 360,000 people who are our neighbors, our community members, our family members, our friends, our co-workers who really are going through these struggles,” Anwar said.
