It was an enormous occasion for the city, during which the young Wollongong High School captain remained unflappable, unlike her hat, which blew off in a gust of wind - a moment captured by the press cameras.

Margaret died last year , but her husband Trevor, who predeceased her, had already instructed their children, "when your mum goes, ring the Mercury !"
