Detroit — Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, whom mayoral opponent the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr. has criticized for her past votes on contracts tied to a Detroit demolition firm whose owner she dated pushed back Sunday, calling the claims “desperate."
Sheffield's Chief of Staff Brian White confirmed the relationship Friday with Brian McKinney, the owner of the Detroit-based demolition firm Gayanga. White provided council records, compiled and confirmed by the City Clerk's office, from more than a dozen council meetings in 2019 that showed around 50 contracts awarded to Gayanga and Sheffield repeatedly voting against the Gayanga contracts.
