New Jersey has some of the most bilingual speakers in the nation, according to the latest Census figures.
The Garden State ranked third in the nation for the highest percentage of residents aged 5 and older who speak a language other than English. Only California and Texas ranked higher.
About 34% of New Jersey residents age 5 and older, or 3,082,476, speak a language other than English. This means that 1 in 3 New Jerseyans was bilingual as of 2024, exceeding the nationwide figure of about 21%.
Of the bilingual residents, nearly 60% speak English very well, and about 40% speak English less than very well.
The figures come from the U.S. Census Bureau’s one-year American Community Survey , which provides a snapshot of how people in the nation live.
