LANSING, Mich. — Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and 21 other attorneys general filed a lawsuit Monday against the U.S. Department of Education (ED). The lawsuit alleges the ED unlawfully restricted eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program.
The PSLF program allows government and nonprofit employees to have their federal student loans forgiven after ten years of service. Those eligible for PSLF include police officers, firefighters, military personnel, teachers, nurses, social workers and more.
Under a new federal rule, certain state and local governments or nonprofit organizations would be deemed ineligible employers for PSLF if the federal government determines they have a "substantive illegal purpose."
