PROSPECT LEFFERTS GARDENS — Jack Kaminer says he has had a “very special” relationship with his former players.
Maybe, that’s because he had a very special relationship with his coach — Herb Bernstein.
The 83-year-old Kaminer played basketball at Eastern District High School — Class of 1960 — and Bernstein was his coach.
“He was very special,” Kaminer told the Eagle. “I grew up in Williamsburg, at the Ten Eyck Houses – a public housing complex.”
It was Bernstein, who took Kaminer under his wing. “He took me to the Catskills to work at Tamarack Lodge in the summers of 1958 and 1959,” Kaminer remembered. “He got me out of the projects. I learned a new world thanks to him.”
He says, it was a “Critical moment in life’s journey.”
So, what does Kaminer — the former Wingate High School bask
