LANSING, Iowa (KCRG) - A ferry service began operating Monday to transport cars and passengers across the Mississippi River after the Black Hawk Bridge closed two weeks ago.

The Pride of Cassville ferry runs from 5:45 a.m. to 9:15 p.m. daily, providing free transportation between Wisconsin and Iowa. The 15-minute crossing offers an alternative to the hour-and-a-half detour through La Crosse that some residents have been making since the bridge closure.

David Vanstone of De Soto, Wisconsin, typically crossed the Black Hawk Bridge multiple times daily for trips to Lansing.

“Probably two or three...maybe four times a day,” Vanstone said. “You forget something, you need a screw or something like that, or even another cup of coffee, I come over, because it’s only 10...15 minutes.”
