GRESHAM, Ore. — When a woman in east Multnomah County called 911 to order a pizza, the dispatcher quickly realized it wasn't a prank. The woman's whispered responses to the dispatcher's coded questions revealed the truth: she was in danger, trapped in her apartment with her children as her partner attacked her.
"911, what's the address of the emergency?" the 911 dispatcher can be heard asking in an audio recording of the call.
"Um, I'd like to order a pizza," the female caller replies.
"Ok, what is the address?" the dispatcher responds, then asks for the apartment number, trying to glean more information.
Not wanting to give away why she's calling, the woman replies, "I would like pineapple, chicken and tomato sauce."
"Are you in danger? Answer yes or no," the dispatcher asks.
