Davidson College officials on Oct. 23 unveiled a striking sculpture — two massive bronze hands rising from the ground.

“With These Hands” honors the Black workers whose labor, often exploited, helped build the university — from the enslaved people who built some of its buildings to the maids and custodians and others in humble jobs who served the college for decades. The unveiling ceremony drew hundreds of people to the school just north of Charlotte and included descendants of some of the college's former workers.
