A monument in “old” St. Joseph Cemetery in Bedford is undergoing restoration. Along with patching, repainting, landscaping, and installing new lights, two new flags were hoisted up: an American flag and an Irish flag.
Dennis Pedley, historical archivist for the Diocese of Manchester, which owns and manages the cemetery, said the memorial was built in 1910 to honor the Sheridan Guard, a unit of Irish American Civil War veterans from Manchester.
Pedley said clergy from St. Joseph Cemetery in Manchester host Mass at the site on several occasions each year, including Memorial Day. The church and several fraternal organizations are funding restoration work on the aging monument to preserve its structural integrity and allow the ceremonies to continue safely.
