David Beckham, the legendary former England football captain, has officially been awarded a knighthood after a prolonged wait. The honour was confirmed earlier this year as part of King Charles’ Birthday Honours, recognising Beckham’s significant contributions to sport and charity.

In a heartfelt statement, Beckham expressed his gratitude, saying, “Growing up in east London with parents and grandparents who were so patriotic and proud to be British, I never could have imagined I would receive such a truly humbling honour.” He reflected on his career, stating, “To have played for and captained my country was the greatest privilege of my career and literally a boyhood dream come true.”

Beckham highlighted his work off the pitch, noting, “I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to represent Britain around the world and work with incredible organisations that are supporting communities in need and inspiring the next generation.” He added, “I’m so lucky to be able to do the work that I do and I’m grateful to be recognised for work that gives me so much fulfilment.” Beckham described the moment as emotional and shared his pride in receiving the honour with his family.

Alongside Beckham, rugby league legend Billy Boston was also knighted, while Alistair Brownlee, Deta Hedman, and Devon Malcolm received OBEs in the same honours list. Beckham began his illustrious football career with Manchester United in 1992, making 394 appearances before moving to Real Madrid. He later played for LA Galaxy, AC Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain, and earned 115 caps for England, captaining the national team on numerous occasions.

After retiring from professional football, Beckham shifted his focus to club ownership, acquiring a stake in Salford City and co-owning MLS side Inter Miami. He has been actively involved in various charitable initiatives and played a pivotal role in securing the 2012 Olympics for Great Britain, as well as leading efforts to host the 2018 World Cup.

Previously, Beckham was awarded an OBE in 2003 and had been nominated for a knighthood in 2011. In 2017, leaked emails suggested he had expressed frustration with the honours system. Following the announcement of his knighthood, his wife, Victoria Beckham, took to social media to celebrate, stating, “You’ve always been my knight in shining armour, but now it’s official. Sir @davidbeckham!!!” She praised his dedication to his country, work, and family, saying, “The way you’ve touched so many lives over the years with kindness and humility speaks volumes about the man you are.”

Manchester United also congratulated Beckham, stating, “Sir David Beckham. Massive congratulations from everyone at United on this special achievement Becks - you truly deserve this.”

Beckham’s knighthood marks a significant milestone in his career, celebrating both his sporting achievements and his philanthropic efforts.
