Eight months after an avalanche buried three heliskiers near Girdwood, Alaska State Troopers confirm a second set of human remains has been recovered.
On March 4, three adult heliskiers were caught in a large avalanche near the West Fork of 20 Mile River. Guides from the commercial heliskiing operation were able to locate the approximate burial area using avalanche beacons, but the skiers were trapped between 40 and nearly 100 feet deep, and immediate recovery was not possible due to safety concerns.
The missing skiers were later identified as David Linder, 39, of Florida; Charles Eppard, 39, of Montana; and Jeremy Leif, 38, of Minnesota. Over the following months, challenging conditions and high avalanche risk delayed recovery operations.
