These days, Carolina Beach Road is one of Wilmington's main drags, with retail outlets, service businesses, restaurants and even a few bars filling the busy corridor from Burnett Boulevard all the way to Monkey Junction and beyond.
Back in the day, however, businesses on Carolina Beach Road were much fewer and more far between, especially once one got south of the Sunset Park neighborhood. But for a while during World War II and through the 1940s, some establishments in what was then the wilds of Carolina Beach Road became popular spots for nightlife, especially for soldiers on leave from Camp Davis in Onslow County.
