NEW TOWN, N.D. (KMOT) – The MHA Nation’s Emergency Operations Center is keeping a close eye on talks in Washington over the shutdown and how it could impact food access and funding of benefits like SNAP.

The EOC held a virtual briefing with community partners and local news outlets on Tuesday.

Emily Sitting Bear says the tribe remains in their current planning phase and will stay that way at least until Friday.

The tribe has not issued an emergency declaration, but is making short-term and long-term plans in case they have to step in to help those in need of food.

They said the situation is changing moment-to-moment, noting President Donald Trump’s announcement earlier Tuesday that no SNAP funding would go out until the shutdown ends.
