FOLLY BEACH, S.C. (WCBD) - Candidates looking to become the next mayor of Folly Beach will head to a runoff following Tuesday's election.

Most of the five mayoral candidates spent their day outside the polls at Folly Beach Baptist Church from open to close, greeting voters and hoping for the opportunity to lead the beach community.

Tim Goodwin, who has served as mayor since 2010, decided to retire and not seek re-election after 15 years in office.

Elton Culpepper, Chris Bizzell, DJ Rich, Katherine Houghton, and Ann Peets were all on the ballot seeking that office; however, none of the candidates received the 50% threshold to be declared a winner. Therefore, the top candidates will head to a runoff election in two weeks.

The winner of that runoff will serve a four-year term.
